Career development or career delay? Postdoctoral fellowships and the de-professionalizing of academic work in South African universities

This paper argues that the South African postdoctoral fellow system is de-professionalising academic work by constituting postdocs as students who receive training from university rather than employees for it. Ironically, it obscures this de-professionalisation with a discourse of fellowships ‘professional development’ opportunities. case made through critical analysis which contrasts way universities construct on their websites structural functions fellows fulfil within commodifying higher education system. Postdocs produce research outputs more cheaply employees, and in makes score better various metrics only count permanently-employed academics. Considering Fairclough’s ideas about relationship between semiotic other elements institutions, serves delaying distracting tactic keeps us asking whether scholars should be supported stable employment.
